No Sugar, No White Flour for 1 Month

My new year’s resolution this year was to lose 1 lb per week until my cousin Laura’s wedding at the end of June.  To do this I took up the Couch to 5K running plan, signed up for my first ever organized run in February (it’s only 1 mile) our local Love Your Heart Run.  In addition I had decided to use Lent as a way to boost this goal.  Unfortunately I realized that I am going to be traveling for over a week during the end of March/beginning of April.  I am going to Alaska, I promise to take lots of pictures and post them.  But it means that I will not have a lot of control over what I eat during that week.  So as an alternative I have decided to alter the timeline a little bit.  Instead of Lent (February 22-April 8th) I am starting February 6th and ending Saturday March 22nd (40 days excluding Sundays).  I will probably use Sundays as a possible cheat day, the way that Lent is viewed as well.

The rules:  What this means is NO added sugar, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup etc.  But I can have honey, fruit and pure maple syrup.  NO white flour, white rice or overly processed grains.  But I can have whole grains such as steel cut oats, brown rice, 100% whole wheat bread products.  The goal of this is #1 It is difficult, Lent is supposed to be meaningful and hard, it is a sacrifice.  #2 Decrease/Eliminate my dependence on processed food products and too much sugar.  #3 Help with my weight loss goal.  I will post some of the things that I eat during the 40 day fast.  My fast starts today!

Do you observe Lent?  If so, do you think that it is 40 days straight from Ash Wednesday to Easter (technically 45 days) or are you allowed to cheat on Sundays?
